How To Help

A Little Help Goes a Long Way
We realize not everyone can help us financially. And that's okay. We offer lots of ways for you to become part of Team Tomten.  Just the fact that you are taking the time to visit our website makes us smile with appreciation.

There are many, many nonprofit organizations appealing for your attention. They deserve your help as well. We encourage you to research and support as many as you can. Donate, but donate wisely. We are proud to offer you this promise:

Tomten Farm and Sanctuary is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to the moral, ethical and transparent utilization of all donated funds.

We pledge to dedicate 100% of your tax-deductible donations to the care and well-being of the animals we rescue and the costs incurred in saving the lives of future animals in need. You have our word that we will never divert any donations for our own personal use or to support our personal animals who also live at the farm. Not a single penny. Please feel free to contact us anytime with any questions or concerns.

We encourage you to explore all the ways you can help. It can be as easy as working with us on a Down and Dirty Work Day. Maybe you have a special skill you would like to share with us (writing grants, using media contacts to help us get some publicity, capturing professional photos of our animals, etc.). And easiest of all, just "Like" and "Follow" our Facebook page or "Share" that page and this website with a friend you think might enjoy it, too!

Donate to Our General Fund
Money may not buy happiness but it can help us pay for our ever-present everyday farm expenses like seasonal inoculations, emergency vet visits, fence repairs, etc. etc. etc. and that will surely help make our Rescues happy! Donations gratefully accepted at address below or via PayPal (use credit card or PayPal account).

Become a Monthly Donor
We can always count on three things here at Tomten...

  1. Every one of our rescued animals will always need hay, grain, etc.
  2. The bills for that hay, grain, etc. will arrive every month like clockwork, and
  3. Thanks to all that hay, grain, etc., we will never see a day when there isn't plenty of manure to pick up!!

You probably can't help with the clean-up (unless, of course, you sign up for one of our Down and Dirty Workdays!), but you can help with the first two!

Donating every month is easy and convenient. Just use the special "Donate" buttons below to tell us how much you want to send to Tomten per month, and you're done! Your tax-deductible donation will arrive in our account automatically. When you sign up to become a Monthly Donor, we know we can count on $10, $25, $50 or more from you each and every month for as many months as you choose. So in addition to putting food on the table (or, more specifically, in the grain buckets), it is, as they say, money in the bank for Tomten Farm and Sanctuary. Money we know we can depend on to put toward the needs of your favorite animal (or category of animals; i.e. you can say, "Feed the Donkeys!) or to put toward farm bills that come in that month. Tell us your preference and we'll make it happen.

Donate Directly to Our Feed Store Account
Due to rugged New England weather and its relatively short growing season, grazing opportunities here at Tomten Farm and Sanctuary are, unfortunately, limited. Translation: we go through a lot of hay! We feed our high-maintenance off-track thoroughbreds good quality forage ... square bales of timothy supplemented with alfalfa. Ponies and goats also enjoy good quality timothy and, because Pippalottaspotslongstocking is a senior guy, we supplement his diet with Dengie® (an easy to chew, highly digestible chopped hay suitable for horses with poor teeth). Dodge Grain is our supplier of hay as well as grain and shavings. At our request, they have set up a direct donation to Tomten Farm and Sanctuary account so you can be confident that 100% of your donation will go toward hay (approx. $8-$10 per bale) grain (approx. $15-$25 per bag), shavings (approx. $6 per bag) and miscellaneous barn supplies (salt licks, pitchforks, etc.). You can also order many of the items on our
Wish List from Dodge Grain who will then deliver it to us with our next order. Please be sure to specify "for Tomten Farm and Sanctuary" and include your name and address when you mail your check or when you call to give them a credit card number. It's very important to us that we are able to contact you to thank you!

Sign up for Amazon Smile
Love Amazon? We do, too! That's because when you sign up for Amazon Smile naming Tomten Farm and Sanctuary as the charity you want to support, every time you make an Amazon purchase from that day forward, Amazon will donate 0.5% of your Amazon Smile purchase to Tomten. All you have to do is sign up and buy the items you would normally order anyway! It's easy! Just click on this link. And thank you!

Ask Your Employer About Corporate Matching /Grant Programs
Will your employer match your donation to a favorite 501(c)(3) non-profit organization like Tomten Farm and Sanctuary? Just think…even if you can only afford a $25 donation to Tomten, with an employer match, that donation magically becomes $50! Or, even better, do they provide you the opportunity to annually direct a generous mini-grant to a non-profit organization of your choice? Many of these employee benefits are never utilized. Please ask if these benefits are offered by your employer.

In addition to saving the lives of animals in need, part of our mission at Tomten Farm and Sanctuary involves bringing people and animals together to enjoy the gifts of joy, peace, happiness, love, education and enrichment opportunities for all.

Whether you are interested in helping us plan and conduct special events, you want to get down and dirty and help with special projects or farm work on Down and Dirty Work Days,  or you are a Scout troop eager for a community service project, we welcome your inquiry regarding current volunteer opportunities. Together, we are Tomten Farm and Sanctuary.

Leave a Legacy of Caring
There are many ways to include your support of Tomten as part of your estate planning. Your attorney can help you make a bequest to Tomten in your will, you can name Tomten as a beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement plan, or as a life insurance beneficiary. If you do choose to honor Tomten by donating in this very special manner, be sure to let us know so we can express our appreciation to you now in addition to expressing it to your family later.

Gift Donations
Birthdays, graduations, weddings, thank you, honoring a beloved pet or animal lover in lieu of flowers… all are perfect opportunities to give the animal lovers in your life a donation in their name to Tomten Farm and Sanctuary. Just give us the recipient's name and address and the occasion he/she is/are celebrating and we will be happy to mail out a card announcing your generous gift.

Foster! Adopt!
Do you have an extra stall available for temporary fostering? Are you considering adopting a rescued animal? Would you like to hear more about our TADAdoption program where you can help provide Sanctuary for animals so they can stay right here at Tomten Farm and Sanctuary for the rest of their lives?

Does the idea of offering a needy animal peace, protection and possibility make your heart sing?  If so, you may be just the person we want to talk with.

Help Save an Animal at Risk
As space and funds permit, we plan Rescue Missions to livestock auctions to save high-risk animals from slaughter. While the winning bid for that animal is oftentimes low, the cost of these missions adds up quickly: gas for truck/trailer, Coggins certificate, 30-day quarantine expense, vet & farrier & equine dentist exams/follow-up expenses and subsequent care, feeding and training costs. Watch our Facebook page for announcements of our upcoming Rescue Missions.

Surprise Us With Something on Our Wish List
It has been brought to my attention that I am not as good at asking for your help as I should be. I know, I know, but I never want to be 'that rescue' that is always begging, pleading for help and funds. So I often drag my feet when it comes to posting requests.

The truth is, though, to manage a growing sanctuary, we DO need help of all kinds. If you own a farm, you know it's always something... our wheelbarrow has a flat tire! Or the cold and ice has cracked the water buckets. Or we are low on hay. Our Wish List is always changing/expanding, so check back here and on our Facebook page. Thank you for helping any way you can. Many of the items on our wish list cost under $25.

    Always Appreciated:

    • Donations to our Dodge Grain/Hay Account (see above)
    • Uncle Jimmy's Hanging Balls
    • Tractor Supply Gift Cards
    • SmartPak Gift Cards
    • Lowe's or Home Depot Gift Cards
    • Farmway (Bradford, Vermont) Gift Cards
    • Monthly donors (we have fewer than 30 at this time and would love more)
    • Potential Adopters for our Gideon's Gifts Cow Adoption Initiative

For many more choices and our complete Wish List, please see pull-down menu on this "How to Help" menu tab.

Did You Know...

…that giving money away can be good for your health?

So suggests researchers Whillans, A. et al in an article titled "Is Spending Money on Others Good for Your Heart?" in Health Psychology as reported in the 2/21/16 Boston Globe. They found that people who reported giving money away—to religious groups, political causes, charities, friends or family—subsequently had lower blood pressure, even controlling for multiple measures of healthy, demographics, financial situation, personality and volunteering. Good deeds=good health? Time's a- wastin'!!

Why not exercise your typing fingers doing a few good deeds for Tomten Farm and Sanctuary? Over 50 easy ways toward 120/80 BP are above.
